Synopsis

Having recently moved to London from Jamaica with her family, little Jemima meets streetwise Johnny, a five-year old boy from the area, who promptly takes her on a tour of the neighbourhood. Johnny and Jemima form a special friendship, innocent to the racial tensions within the community spearheaded by Johnny’s father. The children wonder through the streets of London, and while their lack of supervision may surprise today’s audiences, it is their pairing that perplexes the grown-ups around them, who nevertheless are slowly endeared to their teamwork. When the parents of the two children begin to worry about their whereabouts, Johnny’s father is finally forced to question his racist views. Directed by African-born filmmaker and anti-Apartheid activist Lionel Ngakane, Jemima + Johnny offers a refreshingly optimistic window into a pocket of 1960s London and racial tensions within a community that still resonate today.
