Synopsis

Despite its title, Brazil isn't set in sun-kissed South America - named after an old Latin dance tune, it actually takes place in the Britain of the not-too-distant future. And that Britain is as bleak as it gets - dark, joyless and run by a tyrannical government. Unsurprisingly, it all gets a bit much for clerk Sam Lowry - who finds an escape of sorts by constant daydreaming. One day, he spots a mistake in the mountain of paperwork he's forced to review - but when he tries to correct it, he gets sucked into a nightmare from which no amount of daydreaming can save him. For all the darkness of its themes, Brazil is an incredibly imaginative movie - long regarded as a head-spinning classic of British cinema.
