Synopsis

Life isn't easy for Gilbert Grape: with his mother housebound, it falls to Gilbert and his two sisters to look after their handicapped brother Arnie. As they try and make ends meet, Gilbert's job in a grocery store is threatened by the arrival of a huge "Food Land" supermarket in their small American town. But while the central storyline of What's Eating Gilbert Grape might sound depressing, the movie itself is fun throughout, with Johnny Depp playing Gilbert and a young Leonardo Di Caprio cast as the mischievous Arnie.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
